Pedro And The 100-Year Quest is a platformer game made by Hamumu Software and sponsored by Boy's Life magazine. The player takes the role of the Boy's Life magazine mascot, Pedro the Mailburro, who has been kicked into the basement of BL headquarters and asked to collect the 9 lost issues of Boy's Life magazine. The player is also able to do side quests for extra points, some of which are required to collect all the magazines. The game consists of one large level, and is structured like a 'metroidvania' game. The player is able to collect and items located throughout the level, some of which have special abilities, but is limited by the fact that there are only two inventory slots, denoted by the hotkeys Z and X. The player must search for and obtain specific items to progress towards their goal.
The game was designed (possibly commissioned?) for Boy's Life Magazine's 100th anniversary, and features several Easter Eggs relating to various popular Boy's Life magazine characters. The game released in March 2011. In the same month, a promotional magazine advertisement for the game was written in Boy's Life, as well as 3 cheat codes written throughout the issue. It was originally available to play on boyslife.org but has since been removed and, as it runs on Adobe Flash, is only available to play on a flash emulator such as Flashpoint.
Gameplay[]
The main objective of the game is to collect all 9 magazines using upgrades and items scattered throughout the level. Points are determined by completion of the main quest and various side quests unlocked by picking up certain items. Timing, which also affects points, is determined by a clock that counts down from 39:59 (or sometimes 40:00) at the bottom-right of the screen, with a 10-second punishment for every time Pedro takes damage, applied over the course of about a second in 1-second increments. Upon either a) completion of the main objective, b) the player pressing the [esc] key, or c) the timer hitting zero, the player is greeted by a congratulation screen detailing how much time was left on the timer (with 50 points for each second remaining), as well as point totals for the main objective and for all side quests.
All of the items that are not solely obtainable through cheat codes are necessary for completing the main objective, except 1) the broom and 2) the camera. The camera is necessary for completing its side quest but the broom is not.
Items[]
Name | Picture | Description | Side Quest |
---|---|---|---|
Broom | When held, allows character to attack dust bunnies and big dust bunnies. | Dust Swept | |
Ladder | When dropped, allows character to stand on it and jump higher | N/A | |
Gear | When all 5 Gears are picked up and placed in the Printing Press, the Printing Press is repaired, enabling access to otherwise inaccessible areas, even those unreachable even when using the Ladder. | Press Repairs | |
Vacuum | When held, allows character to suck in ghosts. Also has another use required for completing the main objective, which is that it can suck Square Blocks towards the player. | Ghosts Busted | |
Rat Ray | When held, allows character to attack rats and the king rat. | Rats Roasted | |
Camera | When picked up, 10 squares are highlighted around the level which, when photographed by the camera, return to normal. | Photos Snapped | |
Key | Allows access to the upper office, printing press, and King Rat room. | N/A | |
Auto-Broom | Only obtainable through a cheat code, the auto-broom is different from most items in that it does not take up any space in the inventory, and as such is not bound to a hotkey. | Dust Swept | |
Square Block | This is not a conventional item as it cannot be picked up or obtained, but this is instead slid along the ground and is affected by gravity and the Vacuum. | N/A | |
Magazine | There are 9 of these hidden throughout the game. Get all 9 to complete the main objective! Does not take up space in inventory. | Magazine Mastery | |
Coin | There are 33 of these available via a cheat code which starts a 60-second timer independent of the main game timer, all found in an otherwise unreachable area of the map. | Coins Collected |
Goodguys & Badguys[]
Name | Picture | Description | Weapon |
---|---|---|---|
Pedro | The main character. Is movable via arrow keys, and is able to use items via the Z and X hotkeys. | N/A | |
The Boss | A character who is not seen but who is also the only character with voice lines that are not locked behind a cheat code. | N/A | |
Crazy Coins! Narrator | Only accessible through the crazy coins! side quest cheat code, this character narrates the crazy coins! dialogue. | N/A | |
Pee Wee Harris | Only accessible via a cheat code, Pee Wee Harris is an alternative skin of Pedro the Mailburro. This re-skin does not affect gameplay. | N/A | |
Dust Bunny | HP: 2 Scoots from left to right and back on platforms unless swept or vacuumed to a different platform. Upon death, poofs. | Broom, Auto-Broom | |
Big Dust Bunny | HP: 10 Scoots from left to right and back on platforms unless swept or vacuumed to a different platform. Upon death, spawns 3 Dust Bunnies and makes a big poof animation. | Broom, Auto-Broom | |
Ghost | HP: 1 Floats around in a seemingly random pattern, often going towards the player specifically. Can go through walls and even escape the visible bounds of the map. Upon death, shrinks and decreases in opacity until it is invisible. | Vacuum | |
Rat | HP: 4 Walks from left to right or right to left on platforms. When a Rat reaches the end of its platform, it jumps onto the next available platform, taking gravity into account. When it reaches a wall, it turns around and does not jump. Firing 4 quick pulses or holding down the hotkey for 4 seconds will kill the Rat. Upon death, the rat fizzles out, its eyes drop to the floor, and, after a blinking animation, those pop, incrementing the "Rats Roasted" completion icon. | Rat Ray | |
Rat King | HP: Unknown Guards a magazine and sits without moving. Shoots fireballs in multiple directions, looping the same pattern every time. Upon death, fizzles out in a massive explosion. Typically requires two cycles to kill. | Rat Ray |
